Inkoom – The money played a part

The right-back has joined Ukrainian side Dnipro FC on a four-year deal worth 7-million dollars to his club Basle and one that KickOffGhana.com understands triples his present salary.

But is a move many in Ghana consider a backward one given the struggles he is likely to have with the weather and against the background that Eastern Europe has traditionally been a difficult cultural and social setting for Ghanaian and African footballers.

Inkoom though, claims it will all work out fine. “As a footballer sometimes you can be required to play anywhere and over the years Ukraine has made significant progress, which you can see in the manner their clubs do in the European club competitions.

“The sporting challenge in coming to Dnipro is strong because the club is ambitious and you can see that in the fact that they have one of the biggest coaches in Juande Ramos.

“I can understand why people will wonder why I am going there, but this is what I do for a living and it is important that I make decisions that help me in the long term. I am not going to lie about it, the money is very good and for my future that is very important,” he said.

The 21-year-old passed a medical on Wednesday morning before he was given a tour of the facilities at the club’s new grounds. He will join up with the rest if his new teammates at their winter training camp in Spain on Friday.

The former Asante Kotoko defender spent one-and-a-half seasons at Swiss side Basle after his move from Asante Kotoko earning valuable experience from playing in the Uefa Champions League and the Europa League in the process.

He was a key member of the Ghana side that reached the final of the 2010 Nations Cup and the quarterfinals if the World Cup.

And he us adamant the move to Ukraine rather Ghana set his career back will enhance it. “I want to assure Ghanaians that this is not as bad as some of them think. I thought through it well,” he concluded.
