Inaki Williams is enjoying a stellar scoring season with Athletic Club, notching eight goals in 19 appearances, propelling the Basque side to fifth place in La Liga. Despite his remarkable form, the 29-year-old forward, who played once for Spain in 2016, committed his international future to Ghana in 2022, the birthplace of his parents.
Expected to feature prominently at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Williams expressed his frustration with his limited opportunities in the Spain squad under Luis Enrique. Despite being on shortlists during the reigns of Julen Lopetegui and Vicente del Bosque, Williams found himself excluded for several years.
Reflecting on his decision to play for Ghana, Williams stated, “In the end, the door opened for me to play for Ghana and a trip with family made me change my plans. The moment of my life and my career is, in part, being in the national team and being able to see my Ghanaian family more often. I’m proud of the decision I made, and playing in a World Cup with the national team will go down in history.”
As Spain’s loss becomes Ghana’s gain, Williams’ absence will be felt by Athletic Club in key fixtures next month, showcasing the impact of his commitment to the Black Stars.
