Inaki Williams has been named the new captain of Athletic Bilbao following Oscar De Marcos’ retirement.
De Marcos played his final game for the club against Barcelona and was given a heartfelt farewell by fans and players.
He emotionally handed over the captaincy to Williams, praising his time at the club: “Today I’m not here to say goodbye. I’m here to say thank you… It’s been sixteen years of giving everything I had, and receiving so much more in return.”
Williams, who deputized De Marcos last season, will lead the team as they return to the UEFA Champions League. He had a standout season, contributing 14 goals in 35 La Liga games and winning the best African player in the Spanish league award. However, Williams will miss Ghana’s Unity Cup matches in London due to a minor injury.
De Marcos’ legacy and leadership will be remembered, and Williams faces new challenges as captain.
