Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has issued a stern warning over rising violence and misconduct in domestic football, cautioning that the local game risks losing its support base to foreign leagues if decisive action is not taken.
The Minister emphasized the urgent need for calm, discipline, and professionalism across all levels of the game ; from club officials and players to match officials and supporters.
“If we allow this to continue, 90% of fans will focus on foreign leagues rather than our own,” he stated. “People must be punished when they are found doing something wrong, irrespective of their status or political affiliation.”
His comments come in response to a spate of troubling incidents in the Ghana Premier League and Division One League, including pitch invasions, assaults on referees, and vandalism of stadium property, all of which have drawn public outrage and raised serious safety concerns.
While reaffirming government support for sports infrastructure and development, Adams noted that such efforts will count for little if local football continues to be plagued by lawlessness and insecurity.
