Asante Kotoko legend George Kennedy has thrown his weight behind interim head coach Abdul Karim Zito, urging the club’s management to allow him to prove himself over the remainder of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.
Speaking in an interview following Zito’s recent appointment, Kennedy emphasized that it is too early to talk about hiring a new head coach.
He believes the former national youth coach deserves a fair chance to guide the Porcupine Warriors and possibly secure the role permanently based on performance.
“For now, it is very early to determine whether there is going to be a new coach for Asante Kotoko,” Kennedy said. “If Coach Zito is going to do very well, and wins all the six matches, which criteria are you going to use to remove him and bring a substantive coach? That one cannot happen.”
Zito, who stepped in after the departure of former coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, has been tasked with stabilizing a Kotoko side that has endured a mixed campaign.
With three games left in the season, the Porcupine Warriors are aiming to secure a respectable finish and rebuild confidence among fans.
Kennedy, a revered figure in Kotoko’s history, believes continuity and merit should drive the club’s decisions.
His endorsement adds to growing calls from sections of the Kotoko faithful who have welcomed Zito’s tactical approach and calm demeanor since taking charge.
As Kotoko prepares for their upcoming fixtures, Zito’s performance over the next few weeks could shape the direction of the club heading into the next season and determine whether he earns the top job on a permanent basis or stays as a technical director
