Ghanaian-born midfielder Ibrahim Salifu has opened up on his decision to represent Benin, citing the desire to honour his late father.
Born and raised in Ghana, Salifu played at youth levels for the Black Stars but switched allegiance to the Squirrels ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The former Hearts of Oak playmaker, now with FC Drita, is set to make his senior debut for Benin after waiting for a call-up from Ghana.
“I am very happy to play for Benin, because my late father was also from Benin, so it is not difficult for me to change nationality,” he told 299 Foot.
“It’s an emotional moment for me and my family. I know he would have been proud to see this day.”
Salifu expressed excitement about his new challenge and said he is ready to contribute fully to the team.
“This is a new challenge and a big motivation for me. I’m coming with commitment, hard work, and a desire to help the team achieve success,” he added.
If he impresses head coach Gernot Rohr, Salifu could be included in Benin’s squad for the AFCON in Morocco. T
he Squirrels have been drawn in Group D alongside DR Congo, Botswana, and Senegal, aiming to make a strong tournament showing.
