Former Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports Chairman, Kobena Mensah Woyome, has backed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to retain Otto Addo as Black Stars coach, despite mounting pressure for his dismissal.
Addo’s position has been under scrutiny following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations, a first in 20 years
.
The four-time African champions had a dismal qualifying campaign, failing to win any of their six games and managing just three points out of a possible 18.
Despite the disappointing results, Woyome believes Addo deserves another chance to redeem himself.
“I don’t agree with those calling for Otto Addo’s dismissal. I admit that he failed to qualify the Black Stars for AFCON, but I don’t believe he would want to set another bad record by failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
“If we sacked him and brought in a new coach who also failed, I don’t think that would be a good decision. I believe retaining him is the right call, and I hope he will turn things around by ensuring we qualify for the World Cup,” the former Member of Parliament for South Tongu told Asempa FM.
The Black Stars return to action in March for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar
