I am confident Ghana can win 2023 AFCON tournament – Ex-captain Stephen Appiah

Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah has expressed his optimism about Black Stars’ chances of winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated to be hosted in Ivory Coast next year.

The four-time African champions last lifted the ultimate in 1982 in Libya and has since then struggled to end it trophy drought.

However, with less than months to kick off the tournament, Appiah, who led the country to qualify for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup insists Ghana can end its 41 trophyless jinx but urged the playing body to believe in themselves.

“I am very confident that Ghana can win the Afcon,” he said during the unveiling of the TotalEnergies AFCON trophy at the TotalEnergies Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

“Today football is played everywhere and that’s why you’ll find it difficult to even play Comoros.

“We should believe in ourselves and in the team.

“They should go out there and represent Ghana the best they can,” he added.

Ghana have been drawn in Group B alongside Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique.

The Afcon kicks off on the 13th of January 2024 and will end on the 11th of February 2024.
