Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Eric Ofori Antwi believes the club urgently needs a sporting director to bring structure and professionalism to its transfer dealings.
The ex-Ghana U20 shot-stopper, who had a brief stint with the Phobians earlier in his career, says Hearts have suffered from inconsistent recruitment and lack of long-term planning ; issues he believes could be addressed with the right sporting leadership.
“Hearts of Oak need a sporting director ; someone who will oversee all player transfers, both incoming and outgoing,” Antwi said in an interview. “Right now, there’s no clear direction. Players come and go without any proper structure.”
The Phobians have endured a turbulent campaign in the Ghana Premier League, marked by frequent coaching changes, squad imbalances, and underwhelming performances on the pitch. Critics and fans alike have pointed to poor recruitment as one of the major reasons for the team’s struggles.
Antwi, who also played for Medeama SC and Asante Kotoko during his career, believes that installing a competent sporting director will help bridge the gap between management, the technical team, and the playing body — creating continuity and a clearer footballing philosophy.
“Without someone overseeing the football side of things, every new coach comes in and tries to start from scratch. That’s not sustainable,” he added.
Hearts of Oak, one of Ghana’s most successful clubs, have not won the league since their title-winning 2020/21 season under Samuel Boadu. They currently face the threat of missing out on continental football again if urgent steps are not taken .
