Accra Hearts of Oak were forced to settle for a frustrating goalless draw against Basake Holy Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday afternoon, extending the Phobians’ winless run in the Ghana Premier League.
The result means Hearts missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Medeama SC, who surprisingly suffered defeat at home over the weekend. Despite that slip at the summit, the Phobians could not capitalize and remain third on the table, now three points behind the top spot.
The match took a difficult turn for the home side in the 65th minute when defender Kelvin Osei Asibey was shown a red card after holding his opponent to stop a clear run on goal, reducing Hearts to ten men for the remainder of the contest.
Sensing an opportunity, Basake Holy Stars pushed forward in search of a late winner. However, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced a series of crucial saves to keep Hearts in the match and ensure the points were shared.
The draw extends Basake Holy Stars’ unbeaten streak to three matches, following their recent back-to-back victories, and lifts them to 11th place on the league table.
Looking ahead, Basake Holy Stars will host Young Apostles FC in their next league fixture.
Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak face a challenging trip to Kpando where they will take on Heart of Lions as they attempt to rediscover their winning form.
