Heart of Lions coach Bashir Hayford has backed the call for a minimum wage for Ghana Premier League players, citing the need for salaries to commensurate with performance.
“Professionally, it is good because your salary should commensurate with your performance,” he stated on Onua sports.
Hayford suggested that clubs should offer a minimum wage, with performance-based incentives added to players’ salaries.
“So, it will be fantastic that all Ghana Premier League clubs, if possible, should give a minimum amount… However, when a player goes to a club, the performance contract must be taken into consideration and some more added to his salary based on the player’s performance.”
He acknowledged that disparities in player salaries are influenced by club finances, citing the example of Asante Kotoko’s support from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II versus King Faisal Babes’ resources.
Hayford’s stance is supported by Bibiani Goldstars defender Vincent Adae Atinga, who highlighted the struggles of players earning low wages.
“Can you imagine a Ghana Premier League player taking GH¢1,000? To be honest, it’s very bad because you may have parents and even the GH¢1000 doesn’t come [on time].”
Atinga emphasized the need for a minimum wage, saying, “At least there should be a minimum wage for players and the authorities can work that out.”
