Harry Kane says the prospect of returning to England to challenge Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record has become less important since he joined Bayern Munich.
The England captain moved from Tottenham to Bayern in 2023 after scoring 213 Premier League goals. That left him 47 short of Shearer’s record total of 260, which had previously been a major target for the striker.
However, Kane’s priorities have changed during his time in Germany. The 32-year-old says he is settled in Munich and is preparing to hold discussions with Bayern about a possible contract extension, despite entering the final year of his existing four-year agreement.
Kane’s position represents a shift from the ambition he had while playing in the Premier League. His 213 goals for Tottenham placed him second on the competition’s all-time scoring list behind Shearer, while his move to Bayern appeared to leave open the possibility of a future return to England.
Instead, Kane has enjoyed an outstanding spell with the German champions. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances last season as Bayern completed a domestic league and cup double.
His performances also earned him the Bundesliga Golden Shoe after he finished the campaign as the league’s leading scorer. That individual success, alongside Bayern’s team achievements, has strengthened the striker’s connection with the club.
Kane has also pointed to his family’s happiness in Germany as an important reason for his desire to remain in Munich. The forward says life away from football has helped make Bayern a comfortable place for him and his family.
The striker has credited Bayern manager Vincent Kompany with helping him reach the best level of his career. Kompany, the former Manchester City defender, took charge in 2024 and has encouraged an attacking style that Kane believes has improved his performances.
Kane has highlighted Kompany’s approach and the freedom given to Bayern’s players as key elements in his development since the Belgian became manager. That system has allowed him to continue producing at a prolific rate while playing for one of Europe’s leading clubs.
Although Kane’s Premier League record remains within reach, his comments indicate that breaking Shearer’s mark is no longer his overriding objective. His immediate focus is Bayern Munich, where he is settled, has won domestic honours and is considering a new deal.
Kane’s current contract still has a further year to run, but discussions over an extension would underline the change in direction since his departure from Tottenham. Rather than prioritising a return to England, he is now looking to continue his career in Germany after establishing himself as one of Bayern’s most productive players.
