Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of Inter Miami’s 2022 Major League Soccer campaign.

The 34-year-old joined Inter Miami in 2020 and has scored 27 goals in 67 games for the MLS outfit. However, the time has come for him to hang up his boots.

With two regular-season games remaining, Higuain’s Inter Miami are in contention for an MLS Cup Playoff spot. Can the veteran forward go out on a high note and guide the Herons the glory?

Following the announcement that Higuain will retire before the end of the year, now is the perfect time to look back at his glittering career for both club and country.

  • River Plate (2005-2007) – 41 Games; 15 Goals
  • Real Madrid (2007-2013) – 264 Games; 121 goals
  • Napoli (2013-2016) – 146 Games; 91 Goals
  • Juventus (2016-2020) – 149 Games; 66 Goals
  • AC Milan (2018-2019) – 22 Games; 8 Goals
  • Chelsea (2019) – 18 Games; 5 Goals
  • Inter Miami (2020-2022) – 67 Games; 27 Goals
  • Argentina (2009-2018) – 75 Games; 31 Goals

Higuain started his professional career at River Plate, scoring 15 goals in 41 games for the Argentine giants. In 2007, having made a name for himself, he joined Real Madrid for €12 million.

The striker won three La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey during his time in Spain, bagging 121 goals and 56 assists in 264 appearances for Los Blancos.

Higuain left Madrid for Napoli in 2013, joining the Italian club for €40 million. He went on to rack up 91 goals and 26 assists in 146 games for Napoli and claimed the Serie A Golden Boot in his final season.

In 2016, he swapped Naples for Turin – teaming up with Juventus. He netted 66 goals in 149 matches for Juve, firing the club to three Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia crowns and a Champions league final appearance.

During his time at Juve, Higuain had loan spells at AC Milan and Chelsea. After struggling to nail down a place in the starting XI, he joined MLS side Inter Miami in 2020.

At the time of writing, the 34-year-old has notched 27 goals and 11 assists in 67 games for the Herons. With two games remaining – and the possibility of the playoffs – he could add to his tally in the coming weeks.

In addition to a hugely successful club career, Higuain has enjoyed plenty of success on the international stage. He scored 31 goals in 75 caps for Argentina, helping his country to reach the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 Copa America final.

Few would argue that Higuain is not one of the best strikers of all time. The prolific marksman has scored countless goals for many of the world’s biggest clubs, securing plenty of silverware along the way.
