Gonzalo Garcia scored his first Premier League goal on his Fulham debut, giving the home side renewed hope against Chelsea at Craven Cottage on Monday evening.
The 20-year-old Spanish forward reduced Chelsea’s advantage to 3-2 in the 54th minute, finishing from close range after following up on a header that had been saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Garcia’s goal changed the mood inside Craven Cottage and offered Fulham a fresh opportunity to fight their way back into the match. The home side had been trailing by three goals, but the new signing’s intervention cut the deficit to one and gave Fulham further encouragement as they searched for an equaliser.
Chelsea had established their advantage through Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. Joao Pedro opened the scoring in the first minute, before Rogers added a second in the 41st minute. Palmer then struck in the 49th minute, only five minutes before Garcia responded for Fulham.
The sequence left Chelsea 3-2 ahead after Garcia’s effort, with the Fulham striker’s first Premier League goal immediately becoming one of the key moments of his first appearance in the competition.
Garcia joined Fulham during the summer after leaving Real Madrid. His move to the London club came at the request of former Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who is now in charge of Fulham.
The match between Fulham and Chelsea was played at Craven Cottage in the final fixture of the opening round of the Premier League campaign. For Garcia, it was an especially notable introduction to English top-flight football: he made his competition debut and opened his Premier League account in the same appearance.
His goal also provided a significant response to Chelsea’s fast start. Joao Pedro’s strike after just one minute had given the visitors early control, while Rogers and Palmer further strengthened Chelsea’s position before half-time and immediately after the interval.
Fulham’s comeback attempt was led by Garcia’s movement and alertness inside the area. After Sanchez had kept out the initial header, the Spanish forward reacted quickly to the rebound and converted the follow-up in the 54th minute.
The goal represented Garcia’s first for Fulham in the Premier League and came against Chelsea in front of the home supporters at Craven Cottage. It also highlighted the immediate impact expected from a player brought to the club from Real Madrid following Arbeloa’s recommendation.
With the score reduced to 3-2, Fulham were handed a renewed chance to pursue an equaliser after Chelsea’s three-goal lead had appeared to put the visitors firmly in command.
