Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie has cast doubt on the impact of the recently announced GHC 1 million cash injection into Premier League clubs, warning it will do little to curb the steady outflow of Premier League players to other countries.
The financial package, revealed by FA boss Kurt Okraku, comes on the back of a new broadcast partnership involving the football governing body, the government through Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Adesa Productions.
The deal was unveiled in Accra on July 31, with the 2025/26 season set to kick off on September 12.
But Afriyie believes the move will barely scratch the surface in addressing player retention challenges.
“The money is not enough to retain players in the league,” he said.
“In Ethiopia, players earn about $2,500; in Tanzania, they make between $2,500 and $3,000; and in Sudan, salaries are close to $5,000. So, offering someone 5,000 Ghana cedis is simply not enough to compete with these leagues.”
He stressed that if Ghana truly wants to build an attractive domestic competition, the financial realities must match the ambitions.
“These are the things we should be thinking about if we want to make our league attractive,” he added.
