Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto de Zerbi has revealed that Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey is facing an extended period on the sidelines due to his latest injury setback.
Lamptey, who was making a comeback from a previous injury, sustained the setback during the match against Nottingham Forest, and his absence could jeopardize his participation in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking ahead of their Europa League match against AEK Athens on Thursday, de Zerbi confirmed Lamptey and Ansu Fati will be out for a long time. “We have lost Ansu for a long time. Same for Lamptey, they will be out for long time.”
This adds to Lamptey’s recurrent injury concerns, posing a significant challenge for him to be fit in time for the continental showpiece.
The 2023 AFCON is slated to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from January-February 2024.
Ghana are pitted in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
