Former Ghana defender, John Paintsil has indicated that he believes the current Black Stars squad can end the country’s long search for an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
The Black Stars have gone four decades without winning an AFCON title. The last time Ghana lifted an AFCON title was back in 1982.
According to John Paintsil, Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is a trophy-winning squad that has the potential to end that long drought for the national team.
“The squad we assembled to Qatar is a trophy-winning squad,” John Paintsil said in an interview with Service Radio in Sunyani.
The former Black Stars full-back added, “The players did well but we lost our plan and the momentum in the last game against Uruguay.
“Africa Cup of Nations Cup is around the corner. There is no African team that can challenge this current crop of Black Stars players.
“They are close to winning a trophy for the Nation.”
Ghana is hopeful of qualifying for the 2023 AFCON tournament to push to end the 40-year title drought.
