Ghana’s Black Satellites have been knocked out of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after ending their Group B campaign without a victory.
The four-time African champions drew 0-0 with Togo on Sunday at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire. The result left Ghana third in Group B with two points from three matches and ended their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
Ghana went into the final group fixture knowing that only a win would keep their campaign alive. Their tournament had begun with a 4-2 defeat by Nigeria, before they drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso in their second match.
That sequence meant Maxwell Konadu’s side needed to collect all three points against Togo to remain in contention. However, despite creating chances during the match, Ghana could not find the goal required to revive their hopes.
The goalless draw confirmed their early elimination and extended a disappointing campaign in which the Black Satellites scored three goals but failed to win any of their three matches.
Ghana’s record in the group stage consisted of one defeat and two draws. Their opening loss to Nigeria placed them under immediate pressure, while the stalemate with Burkina Faso left them needing a decisive result in their final fixture.
Instead, the Black Satellites were held by Togo, bringing their involvement in the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship to a close at the group stage.
Despite the setback in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana have already secured a place at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Their qualification is guaranteed because Ghana will host the continental tournament.
The 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations will be held as part of celebrations marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
The early departure from the regional competition is therefore likely to shift the focus towards preparations for next year’s continental championship. Ghana will have the advantage of competing on home soil, but the WAFU B campaign has highlighted the work required before that tournament begins.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to assess both the playing squad and the technical team following the group-stage exit. Those preparations will be aimed at developing a more competitive Black Satellites side capable of challenging for the title in front of a home audience.
For now, Ghana’s regional campaign ends without a win, with their two points from three matches leaving them third in Group B. The goalless result against Togo was not enough to extend their stay in the competition, despite the opportunities created by Konadu’s team.
