Ghana’s Black Meteors will begin their bid to reach the TotalEnergies CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2027 in the second qualifying round, after being handed a bye in Tuesday’s draw in Cairo.
Desmond Ofei’s side will face either Togo or Libya for a place in the final qualifying round. The first leg of Ghana’s second-round tie is scheduled for 9 November 2026, with the return match to be played on 17 November.
The Black Meteors avoided the opening stage of the three-round qualifying competition, which will determine the seven teams joining hosts Egypt at the eight-team TotalEnergies CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Route to Egypt
If Ghana overcome the winner of the Togo-Libya tie, they will reach the final qualifying round.
Their opponents at that stage will come from the second-round contest involving Sao Tome and Principe, Equatorial Guinea or Niger. The final qualifying round is scheduled to take place between 22 and 30 March 2027.
The draw has therefore given Ghana a clearly defined path through the competition, with the Black Meteors needing to win two rounds of qualifying to secure a place at the finals in Egypt.
The tournament will provide the route towards the next men’s Olympic football tournament, although Ghana’s immediate objective will be to negotiate the two qualifying stages that stand between them and the 2027 finals.
Ghana have not featured in the men’s Olympic football tournament since the 2004 Athens Games. Qualification for Egypt 2027 would move the country closer to ending a 24-year wait for another Olympic appearance.
The Black Meteors’ campaign will begin with the second-round first leg in November 2026, followed by the return fixture eight days later. Should they progress, the decisive final qualifying round will be played in March 2027.
The seven successful teams from the qualifying competition will join Egypt, who qualify automatically as hosts, to complete the eight-team TotalEnergies CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
