Ghanaian winger Kwame Poku is emerging as one of the hottest properties in English football’s lower divisions, with Birmingham City showing serious interest in signing him ahead of their return to the Championship.
The 23-year-old, who represents Peterborough United, delivered an outstanding season despite his team’s struggles near the bottom of League One.
Poku recorded 12 goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions and drew widespread attention with his standout display in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.
His explosive pace, flair, and eye for goal have not gone unnoticed, with Birmingham’s new manager Chris Davies reportedly keen to bring him in as part of the club’s summer rebuild. According to Give Me Sport, Poku fits the bill perfectly for the Blues’ ambitions in the second tier.
“A Championship club tried to force a deal through for Kwame in January, but he was injured and they didn’t offer anything like what we wanted,” Peterborough’s director of football Barry Fry revealed via Peterborough Today. “He is the best player in League One after all.”
The interest extends beyond England. Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers have tracked Poku closely, attending several Peterborough matches this season. However, Fry believes the Ghanaian’s next step is more likely to be a move to a top Championship club than north of the border.
With his stock rising, Peterborough are prepared to demand a significant transfer fee and could spark a bidding war this summer. For Ghana, Poku’s growth offers hope of another attacking gem ready to break into the Black Stars fold.
