Ghanaian defender Richie Laryea returns to Toronto FC in Multi-Year deal

Toronto FC has announced the return of Canadian-born Ghanaian defender Richie Laryea to the club’s squad.

The agreement, reached on Friday, involves a transfer fee with English Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest FC, securing Laryea’s services until 2026, with an option for an additional year.

Toronto FC’s General Manager, Jason Hernandez, expressed immense satisfaction at securing Laryea’s permanent return, emphasizing his embodiment of the club’s core values both on and off the field.

“Richie embodies everything we value in a player and as a person in our new vision for TFC,” Hernandez stated,

Laryea, a 29-year-old defender returns to the Red and Black after a brief loan spell with the Vancouver Whitecaps during the 2023 season. Despite the short stint, Laryea showcased his prowess, making 14 appearances across various competitions and contributing significantly with one goal and three assists for the Caps.

During his previous tenure with Toronto FC in 2022 and 2023, Laryea demonstrated his capabilities with two goals and seven assists in 29 appearances. Head Coach John Herdman, familiar with Laryea’s talents from their time together on the national stage, expressed his delight at the reunion.

“Knowing his skills, character, talent, and dedication from our time together on the national stage, I am confident his presence will be pivotal in our quest for success this season,” Herdman said.

Richie Laryea is expected to play in Toronto FC’s away game against FC Cincinnati tomorrow in the MLS.
