Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says Ghana should treat the 2026 FIFA World Cup as more than just a competition — but as a global showcase of the country’s readiness to host the tournament in the near future.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during the inauguration of an 11-member Inter-Ministerial Oversight Committee, Adams stressed that Ghana’s performance on and off the pitch in North America will influence future hosting prospects.

The committee includes Abedi Pele, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe, and GFA President Kurt Okraku. It has been tasked with coordinating Ghana’s overall preparation and ensuring a unified national strategy ahead of the expanded World Cup.

Adams said Ghana must draw from past lessons to present itself not just as participants but as major players on the global stage.

“Experiences of the past, both positive and negative, will guide us,” he said. “We must ensure that by the time the tournament ends, Ghana will emerge as one of the biggest winners.”

He added that Ghana’s performance should strengthen future bids to co-host the World Cup, a position he has long advocated alongside Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

“The World Cup will be an interesting stage. We will go there and make Ghana and Africa proud, and show that we’re ready to host when the opportunity comes,” he noted.

The Black Stars qualified convincingly and will make their fifth appearance at the finals in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
