Mohammed Muntari has written his name in World Cup history, becoming the first player to score a goal for Qatar at the global showpiece.

The 28 year old was on target in their 3-1 defeat to Senegal in their second Group A game on Friday at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The Kumasi-born forward climbed off the bench in the 73rd minutes and made an instant four minutes later with a towering header which flew past Senegal goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy.

The victory kept Senegal’s aspirations intact for their first appearance in the knockout stages of a WC finals since 2002.

In contrast, Qatar will become the first-ever host nation to be eliminated after two matches, if Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador.
