Ghanaian football legend, Mohammed Polo, has expressed his reservations about the Black Stars’ chances of being tournament favorites, citing their recent underwhelming performances.
The Black Stars are seeking their fifth Africa Cup of Nations title, with their last triumph dating back to 1982 in Libya.
Ghana’s football reputation took a hit during the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, where the Black Stars suffered their worst performance, exiting the tournament in the group stage after failing to secure a victory against Comoros.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Polo, a member of the 1978 AFCON-winning squad, refrained from ranking Ghana among the favorites to clinch the title in Ivory Coast due to their recent lackluster showings in tournaments.
Polo remarked, “For some time now, we are not favorites in any competition because of our performance in recent times. We are not seeded in any draw, which tells you where our football is going. If something good comes along the line, then it’s a miracle.”
While hoping for a positive outcome for the Black Stars in the upcoming AFCON, Polo tempered his expectations, stating, “We pray things will go well for the Black Stars at the AFCON, but I don’t think there is something special we have to talk about. We hope to see something better; if we are able to win the trophy, then that will also be a different thing.”
Ghana has been drawn into Group B for the upcoming AFCON, where they will face tough competition from record holders Egypt, as well as Cape Verde and Mozambique.
