The Ghana Premier League is set to introduce a scaled-down version of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, known as VAR Lite, according to referees manager of the Ghana Football Association Alex Kotey.
Kotey explained that financial constraints necessitate this development.
The modified system will utilize fewer cameras than the standard VAR setup.
“We are working assiduously on providing VAR—we have not let it go. FIFA is trying to introduce a less costly VAR, which is the VAR Lite. When the VAR Lite comes, we will see how best we can implement it because it doesn’t need a lot of cameras,” Kotey told Citi Sports.
“The only challenge is that you don’t get some features in the VAR Lite compared to the full VAR, but it is a stepping stone,” he added.
Despite these limitations, VAR Lite is expected to enhance officiating in the league.
