GFA Elections: George Afriyie raises concerns over club bias in wealth distribution

Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has voiced concerns about Kurt Okraku, the current GFA president, suggesting that Okraku is primarily benefitting his club, Dreams FC.

Both Afriyie and Okraku have submitted their nominations to run for the GFA presidency, with the Elective Congress set to take place on September 27 at the Redaach Memorial Hotel in Tamale.

Afriyie laid out his campaign plans, stating, “I have officially submitted my nominations. In the upcoming days, we will engage with stakeholders in football, shedding light on crucial aspects of the game. Our intention is to present an honest and transparent perspective.”

He further emphasized, “While it’s commendable that there is prosperity within Dreams FC, it’s essential to recognize that this should extend to all clubs, not just one. We must remain vigilant and objective.”

Afriyie drew attention to the potential conflict of interest arising from Okraku’s alleged prioritization of Dreams FC’s financial gains over other prominent clubs like Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

“In the scenario where three of his team members receive substantial World Cup bonuses, questions arise about fairness. We must consider the well-being of all clubs, including Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, and others.”

Afriyie advocated for a transparent and balanced allocation of resources across all participating clubs, emphasizing the necessity of fostering an equitable playing field throughout Ghanaian football.

Amidst the ongoing debate, Kurt Okraku, the incumbent GFA President, has officially declared his candidacy for a second term in the upcoming GFA elections.
