From Mohamed Salah to Lionel Messi? Trabzonspor fans demand another superstar

Trabzonspor supporters have wasted little time raising their expectations after the club’s reported agreement with Mohamed Salah, calling on the Turkish side to make an even more spectacular signing: Lionel Messi.

Fans gathered to celebrate Salah’s arrival in Turkey ahead of the formal completion of his move and turned their attention towards another global football icon. During the celebrations, they chanted: “The fans have gone crazy… we want Messi!”

The chant was a playful but striking expression of the supporters’ ambition, with the crowd making clear that Salah’s reported arrival had not satisfied their appetite for major names. Their words referred to Messi, the captain of the Argentina national team, and reflected the excitement surrounding what has been described as a historic transfer for Trabzonspor.

Salah’s move has generated significant interest both within Turkey and beyond. The reported deal has energised Trabzonspor’s fanbase and encouraged supporters to dream of further high-profile additions to the squad.

Although the calls for Messi were made in a celebratory atmosphere rather than as confirmation of any negotiations, they underlined the confidence supporters have placed in the club’s management. That confidence has grown after the board reportedly succeeded in securing one of the most prominent deals of the summer transfer window.

The celebrations followed Salah’s arrival in Turkey as he prepared to complete the formalities of his transfer. The Egyptian forward is expected to undergo a medical before being officially presented to Trabzonspor’s supporters and the media on Thursday.

Several Turkish reports have claimed that Trabzonspor persuaded Salah to sign a two-year contract. The agreement still requires the formal process to be completed, including the medical examination and official presentation.

For the supporters, however, the excitement has already begun. Their chants transformed the welcome for Salah into a broader statement of ambition, with the crowd moving almost immediately from celebrating one superstar to calling for the arrival of another.

Messi’s name was therefore used as a sign of the heightened expectations created by Salah’s reported transfer, rather than as evidence that Trabzonspor have reached an agreement with the Argentine. No further details about any possible move for Messi were provided in the reports cited.

The reaction nevertheless illustrated the scale of the impact Salah’s signing has had on the club’s supporters. After celebrating the prospect of seeing the Egypt international in a Trabzonspor shirt, they have made it clear that they are already imagining what another landmark signing could mean for the Turkish club.
