Bibiani GoldStars face a daunting challenge in their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie after falling 2-0 to Algerian giants JS Kabylie in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Ghana Premier League champions, making their debut in the competition, conceded midway through the first half when Medhi Merghem latched onto a cross to put the visitors ahead.
Kabylie sealed the win in the 70th minute as Babacar Sarr capitalised on poor defending from a corner to double their advantage.
Head coach Frimpong Manso admitted the result leaves his side with an uphill battle but insisted the tie is not over.
“No [it’s not over yet, now we’ve lost the first leg, yes, and this is the first leg. Next week we go to [Algeria for] the second leg.
Yes, it’s a tall order, but we’ll see if we’re able to correct most of the mistakes we made, I think we’ll do well in the second leg,” he told reporters.
GoldStars must overturn the deficit when they travel to Algeria next week for the return fixture, with a place in the second preliminary round at stake.
