Free State Stars Ghanaian striker Abdul Basit Adam laments injury-plagued season

Free State Stars forward Abdul Basit Adam acknowledges that this has not been the ideal season for him, as he has been troubled by injury and illness.

“Last year I was much better, but this year I have been a little bit on and off and sick. I have also had injuries and this has just taken me back,” said Basit, who sets particularly high standards for himself.

Basit has made just three league appearances for his club this term, and all of those were from the bench, against AmaZulu, Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs.

Basit exploited the opportunity against Swallows, where his brace helped Free State Stars to a hard-fought 3-2 win. He does feel that when he has had opportunities, he has made a meaningful contribution to the team’s cause.

“I do feel like I have made an impact when I have got a chance to play, because I have never started this season. I have always come in the second half and at least I managed to have two goals in three matches,” added Basit.

The Ghanaian teenager has, however, remained optimistic about his prospects of achieving success in South Africa and he is more determined than ever to help the club achieve its targets during the next four to five months.

“But it is not enough for me and it is not enough for the team. What else can we do? I am getting better. I am just trying to see if I can play the last match for 2014. This week I am out and Tuesday’s game too I am out.

“I should actually be out for the next two weeks. I have a muscle strain. Today, I was completely off the field and getting treatment. I managed to jog and do some exercise but I am feeling better now,” added the Ghanaian.

Basit said that the current Free State Stars squad had tremendous ability, adding that they didn’t deserve to be in the relegation zone at this stage in the season. One of his more immediate goals is to help the club counter adversity and re-ignite the campaign before it is too late.

“I still want to achieve big in the PSL and I want to make my team proud and take my team where we belong. For the quality we have, we should not be where we are. I am working hard just to try and achieve big,” he concluded.
