Former President of Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi has broken his silence on what led to the Black Stars’ shambolic performance at the 2014 World Cup.
Ghana endured its worst campaign at the global showpiece in Brazil exiting the tournament in the group stages after failing to win a single game and picking only just one point.
There was a lot of off the pitch incidents which corroborated to the team’s poor show at the mundial.
“2006 was successful, 2010 was also very successful. The most unsuccessful one was in 2014 – there were a lot of problems. Money to be given to the players was released from Bank of Ghana into the Ministry of Youth and Sports account, but releasing the money to the players became contentious” Nyantakyi told Kings TV GH.
An amount of $4 million was flown to Brazil after the team threatened to boycott the rest of the tournament. Ghana had lost their first game to USA.
“The moment we named the 23 players, the Ministry were supposed to pay the players and it will have been through credit transfer but that was a huge problem. There was no need in flying money to Brazil” he concluded.
