Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a nominee for Ghana’s Supreme Court, has reflected on the country’s 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign in Brazil, citing the airlifting of cash for player payments as a regrettable decision during his appearance before Ghana’s appointments Committee of Parliament.
“We said players should not be paid cash. We all saw what happened in Brazil when we had to fly money to Brazil for payment…it was one bad thing for Ghana,” he stated.
Dzamefe chaired a Commission of Enquiry that investigated financial mismanagement and the team’s early exit from the tournament. While some recommendations have been implemented, others remain unaddressed, including funding supporters to travel abroad at the state’s expense.
“We recommended that the state should know far ahead of time so that they can prepare,” he emphasized, highlighting the need for better planning and budgeting.
Dzamefe criticized the ongoing practice of flying supporters abroad, suggesting instead that funds be used to provide match tickets for Ghanaians already in host nations.
He stressed the importance of advance planning for match-related finances to avoid last-minute arrangements.
