FIFA U20 Women’s WC: Ghana’s Black Princesses lose 3-0 to USA in opening Group D match

The Black Princesses of Ghana kicked off the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup with a disappointing defeat to the USA.

Pitted in Group D, the U20 women’s team of Ghana and the USA locked horns today to fight for the three points at stake.

Although the Black Princesses will play some fine football in the early parts of the game, the team lacked the firepower upfront.

After the USA settled and took control of the game, the side scored in the 11 minute thanks to a powerful header from striker Michelle Cooper.

Subsequently, Ghana was reduced to 10 women in the 31st minute when midfielder Jacqueline Owusu was shown the red card.

Six minutes later after that incident, the USA doubled its lead through a strike from Alyssa Thompson.

In the second half, Ghana put up a spirited fight but it was not enough as the USA scored a third and final goal courtesy of an effort from Allyson Sentnor to cruise to a 3-0 win.

Ghana must now prepare to pick crucial points from Netherlands and Japan in the remaining two matches of Group D to progress to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup.
