The family of former Ghana U-17 World Cup winner Kofi Nimo is appealing for public support after the Ridge Hospital in Accra reportedly withheld his body due to unpaid medical bills.

The 51-year-old, who was part of Ghana’s historic Black Starlets squad that clinched the country’s first-ever FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1991, passed away on September 3, 2025, following a prolonged illness.

However, weeks after his death, his family says they are unable to retrieve his remains for burial.

Nimo’s son revealed that he has reached out to several individuals and organisations, including officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and some former players, but his efforts have yielded little help so far.

“I have reached out to some people within the GFA and former players, but I am yet to hear from them. I just want to give my father a decent burial,” he said, adding that the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has been the only body to offer financial support so far.

Nimo was a key member of Ghana’s golden generation of youth footballers who brought pride to the nation in the early 1990s.

His family is now calling on the sporting community, government officials, and kind-hearted Ghanaians to help raise funds to pay the outstanding hospital bills and give the former national hero a dignified farewell.
