Nigeria football legend, Emmanuel Amuneke says he is still haunted by Super Eagles defeat to West African rivals Ghana in the 2022 World Cup playoff.
After managing a 0-0 draw in the first leg meeting in Kumasi, the Super Eagles failed to use home advantage in the return leg as they settled for a 1-1 draw in Abuja and as such the Black Stars qualified on the away goals rule.
“My only disappointment was the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar and this is very painful to Nigerians because we are all passionate about our football” said Amuneke who was one of the poster boys in Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup maiden appearance at USA’94.
“ I’m always thankful that God always give me the ability to forge ahead and I believe time would sort things out, not going to Qatar 2022 with the Super Eagles is painful but life goes on and we must continue to dream of a better tomorrow.”
The 1994 African Footballer of the Year winner however wished all the five African representatives well and tipped Senegal to go all the way in Qatar.
“ I hope the five African teams in Qatar will do us proud and I really do hope one of them can go all the way and I think Senegal have the quality as the African Cup of Nations champions.
“They (Senegal) have a lot of good players a lot of great players but as I said earlier, winning the FIFA World Cup is not only about having great players rather it’s about being focussed, consistent and play cohesively .”
