Former Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen has taken responsibility for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the FIFA 2022 World Cup at the expense of Ghana.
The 57 year old trainer resigned from his position after the Black Stars edged Nigeria in the final playoff round earlier this year.
After managing a 0-0 draw in the first leg meeting in Kumasi, the Super Eagles failed to use home advantage in the return leg as they settled for a 1-1 draw in Abuja and as such the Black Stars qualified on the away goals rule.
Eguavoen on Brila FM’s Big Interview show said: “I failed to take Nigeria to the world tournament when I had the opportunity to; I was trusted with the responsibility. For this reason, I have only been able to watch very little of the games as it makes me even sadder.”
“Well, as head of the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Department, I will just have to start planning now and make sure that Nigeria gets to the next FIFA World Cup in 2026.”
