Ex-Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah reveals he snubbed high profile clubs to sign for Al Khartoum

Ex-Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah says he rejected several offers from high profile teams to sign for Sudanese side Al Khartoum.

Appiah is probably the most famous personality at the 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The ex-Ghana defender signed for the side in December last year after a disastrous Black Stars World Cup campaign in Brazil.

He is being able to guide the club to third place in the Sudanese Premier League.

“Everywhere I go, people have been asking me why I joined this team. Well, there were many offers for me and with high profile teams, but I decided to join Al Khartoum because I felt I could contribute on their goals, one of them being one of the best teams on the continent,” he said.

Appiah believes it’s a huge ask especially in an African setting that lacks the best facilities and structures to nurture talent.

He added: “I have been with this team for seven months now, and there is a lot of progress between my first training session and today, they are not developing at the pace I would want them to, but a lot is being done to transform the players and they are responding well.

“The quality is there but it needs polishing and that’s where my interest is.”

His side made a bright start at the 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup after beating Telecom of Djibouti 5-0 in their opener.
