Former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, Leanier Addy, has described ex-Black Queens coach Nora Häuptle as “overhyped” in the wake of Ghana’s impressive run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana progressed to the semi-finals under Kim Lars Björkegren, who took over in February. The team narrowly missed out on a spot in the final, losing 4-2 on penalties to host nation Morocco after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Meanwhile, Nora, who went on to take charge of the Zambian women’s national team, after leaving Ghana, suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
“We overhyped Nora Häuptle,” Addy told Asempa FM. “If you check Nora’s credentials and compare them to other Ghanaian coaches who’ve handled the team, they were far ahead of her.”
Leanier further urged the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to provide more international friendlies for the Black Queens, adding that Coach Björkegren should be given more time with the squad.
The Queens will now face defending champions South Africa in the third-place playoff on Friday, July 25. The final between Nigeria and Morocco will be played the following day.
