Essien, who returned to action last November after undergoing two surgeries, has been a bench warmer in Roberto Di Matteo’s side.

The 29-year-old was an unused substitute when Chelsea qualified to the UEFA Champions League final at the expense of defending champions Barcelona on Tuesday.

Essien ended his break from international football last year by playing in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifier against Swaziland at home until a nasty injury sidelined him for six months.

But Appiah-who took charge of the Black Stars last week-hopes the box-to-box midfielder will be re-charged in earnest.

“Michael is a very good player and I will wish for his return to the team. He’s been off for some time now. He is now trying to get into his team now,” Appiah told Joy FM
