Essien believes Chelsea deserved victory over Watford after watching Blues in Stamford Bridge

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien says the Blues were unlucky not to have beaten Watford in their clash with Watford in the English Premier League after the Ghanaian attended the game.

The Greece-based midfielder is spending his Christmas holiday with his family in the United Kingdom and joined former team mates Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba in watching the game against Watford.

The 33-year-old, who plays for Panathanaikos, made a return to the club where he rose to fame and global recognition on Saturday but his presence could not inspire the Blues to victory.

Goals from Troy Deeney and Idion Ighalo ensured Watford picked up a point despite Diego Costa’s brace and Essien insists they deserved to have won the game.

“It’s was good to be back at Stamford Bridge,” the Ghana international midfielder Essien wrote on his Instagram page.

“Chelsea were unlucky with the result but there’s always room for improvement. Come on Chelsea.”

Essien joined Chelsea in 2005 from French club Lyon on a bumper transfer fee of £24million, making him the most expensive African footballer at the time.

The Ghanaian scooped two English Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League trophy and three FA Cup titles during his nine years at Stamford Bridge.
