Former Hearts of Oak board secretary and ex-Black Stars management committee member, Ernest Thompson, has called on the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to take a more active role in advocating for the establishment of a National Sports Fund.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Thompson lamented what he described as SWAG’s “silence” on one of the most critical issues affecting Ghanaian sports ; inadequate funding.
“The problem of sports in Ghana is basically funding, and we need to solve it from the roots,” he said. “That’s why some of us have always been pushing for the sports fund. I was a bit disappointed with SWAG because I thought they should have taken this up and pushed hard for it. You don’t get anything from government unless you push, because the Finance Minister also needs his money like air.”
Thompson, a finance and commercial lawyer, urged the association to leverage its influence to lobby Parliament for the fund’s creation, stressing that it would transform sports development in Ghana.
