Erling Haaland has traded his famous blonde locks for a buzzcut as he prepares for the new Premier League season, declaring: “New season, new trim.”

The Manchester City striker revealed his dramatically different hairstyle on social media after removing the long hair that had become one of his most recognisable features.

Haaland will hope the change helps him find the net when Enzo Maresca’s side face Bournemouth at 14:00 BST on Sunday, as he attempts to open his account.

The Norway international had previously been associated with a number of distinctive hairstyles, including his well-known man bun. Footballers including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gareth Bale have also sported memorable man buns over the years.

Before sitting down for the haircut, Haaland entertained himself by looking back at images of his previous styles. He also considered a series of less convincing suggestions for what his new appearance should be.

He appeared nervous as the hairdresser made the first cut, but quickly began to smile as the transformation took shape.

Once the buzzcut was complete, Haaland sought the opinions of several familiar faces. He made video calls to Manchester City team-mate Jack Grealish, Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Gallagher approved of the change, telling Haaland: “You look about 17 years old. It’s good. Change is good.”

Grealish and Guardiola also said they “love” the new look.

“You look about 10 years old. That is hilarious. I can’t stop looking at the front of your hair. I love it,” said Grealish.

Guardiola was equally enthusiastic, adding: “No way. You’re lucky you have hair. I would love to have it. I love it.”

Haaland then contacted Zlatan Ibrahimovic, although the former Sweden international was not impressed by the decision to cut his hair.

Before making the call, Haaland recalled Ibrahimovic’s previous advice and joked that his former international colleague had warned him never to lose his long locks.

“Zlatan told me, never cut your hair, because your strength is in your hair. I’m a bit nervous. I want a buzz cut, like in the military.”

Ibrahimovic’s response suggested that Haaland had ignored advice he had been expected to follow.

“What did you do? You lost a bet or what? Block me and erase my number,” Ibrahimovic said.

The 26-year-old’s new style marks a clear departure from the long blonde hair that has accompanied him during his career. His next focus, however, will be on producing goals for Manchester City when the new campaign continues against Bournemouth on Sunday.
