Asante Kotoko’s new head coach Eric Tinkler has been given an uncompromising directive by the club’s hierarchy: win the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League and build a team capable of competing at the highest level in Africa.
Board chairman James Osei Brown laid out the expectations in stark terms as the club officially unveiled the 54-year-old South African on a long-term deal ahead of the new season.
“The expectation is that we want you to win us the league and then take us to where all of us want us to be,” he said, adding: “You have our full support.”
The appointment of Tinkler, a former South Africa captain with a strong record in both domestic and continental competitions, is being seen as a key part of Kotoko’s attempt to reclaim their status as a dominant force in Ghana and a serious contender on the African stage.
Board sets clear targets for new era
In his address, Osei Brown made it clear that Kotoko’s ambitions extend beyond simply improving on recent campaigns.
The club, one of Ghana’s most decorated sides, expects Tinkler not only to deliver the league title in the 2026/27 season but also to lay the foundations for sustained success.
Kotoko’s leadership has stressed that the new coach will be fully backed in his efforts to rebuild and reshape the squad during pre-season, which is already under way.
The Porcupine Warriors, as the Kumasi-based club are known, endured inconsistent performances in recent seasons and have turned to Tinkler in the hope that his experience and tactical acumen can reverse that trend.
Tinkler’s African and domestic pedigree
Tinkler arrives in Ghana with a substantial coaching resume in African football.
He has managed several leading South African clubs, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits.
On the continent, he guided Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and later led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final, underlining his ability to navigate demanding knockout competitions.
Domestically, he has lifted major South African trophies such as the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout, achievements that Kotoko’s board will hope he can replicate in Ghana’s top flight and cup competitions.
From Bafana Bafana captain to Kotoko boss
Before embarking on his coaching career, Tinkler was a distinguished midfielder for South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana.
He captained his country and made 48 international appearances, playing a part in one of South African football’s greatest triumphs when they won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
Tinkler also represented South Africa at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level of the game.
At club level, he spent much of his playing career in Europe, turning out for sides in England, Italy and Portugal, including Barnsley in the English game and Cagliari in Serie A.
Kotoko eye return to domestic dominance
Tinkler has already started work with his new squad as Kotoko’s pre-season preparations intensify ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League campaign.
The club’s fans will be expecting an immediate upturn in performances, with the board’s explicit title target leaving little room for a lengthy bedding-in period.
Kotoko, who boast a rich history in African football, will also be looking to their new coach to assemble a squad capable not only of regaining supremacy in Ghana but also of challenging for major honours on the continent.
With clear backing from the board and a track record of success in African club competitions, Tinkler now faces the task of translating his experience into silverware in Kumasi – under the watchful eye of a support base accustomed to glory and impatient for a return to the summit.
