Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has revealed he is weighing up whether to retire from international football after his country’s agonising 1-0 defeat by Spain in the World Cup final.
The 33-year-old, who was central to Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022, admitted the loss has left him questioning his future with the national team, saying he is considering if it is “time to step aside”.
In an emotional message posted on Instagram, Martinez wrote: “I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.
“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside.
“I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates.”
World Cup hero now facing crossroads
Martinez, capped 67 times by Argentina, played every minute of his country’s eight matches at the tournament, keeping two clean sheets and conceding eight goals on the way to the final.
Two years earlier in Qatar, he had been one of the symbols of Argentina’s success, helping Lionel Messi lead the side to the World Cup trophy and securing the golden glove as the tournament’s outstanding goalkeeper.
His penalty shootout heroics and commanding presence turned him into a national icon, and his departure from the international scene would mark the end of a transformative era between the posts for Argentina.
The defeat by Spain, however, appears to have hit him hard, prompting a period of deep reflection over his role going forward.
Pain, reflection and possible farewell
Martinez’s Instagram post suggests he is struggling to come to terms with the result and what it means for the latter stages of his career.
“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain,” he told his followers, before apologising to supporters and team-mates. “I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates.”
The goalkeeper did not set a timeframe for making a decision and gave no indication of whether discussions had taken place with Argentina’s coaching staff.
If he does step away, Argentina would lose not only one of the world’s leading goalkeepers but also an experienced dressing-room figure who has been part of their resurgence on the global stage.
Global recognition and club future
Martinez’s standing in the game has been underlined by back-to-back Yashin Trophy wins in 2023 and 2024, an award given at the Ballon d’Or ceremony to the world’s best goalkeeper.
At club level, he has been Aston Villa’s number one since joining the Premier League side in 2020. He is under contract at Villa Park until 2029, reflecting the Midlands club’s desire to build around him in the long term.
Despite that lengthy deal, the Argentine has been linked with a move to Serie A giants Juventus this summer, suggesting his future at club level could also be subject to change in the coming months.
