Eddie Howe has resigned as head coach of Newcastle United after almost five years in charge, with the club confirming that the process of appointing his successor is already at an advanced stage.
The 48-year-old leaves after a disappointing campaign in which Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League. German coach Matthias Jaissle is the favourite to replace him.
Howe guided Newcastle to Champions League qualification twice and oversaw their League Cup triumph in 2024-25, the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years.
“After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role,” said Howe.
He added: “After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.
“Although it’s been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it’s the right one.
“It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United.”
Howe’s departure will also bring the end of his coaching team at St James’ Park. Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone will leave the club, along with head of performance Dan Hodges.
Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, replacing Steve Bruce, and led the Magpies to an 11th-placed finish during his first season.
The following campaign, Newcastle finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades. They secured Champions League football again in 2024-25, while also ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the League Cup.
Newcastle also reached the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time last season. Their run ended in the last 16 with defeat by Barcelona.
However, their domestic campaign was far less successful. They lost 17 of their 38 Premier League matches and ended the season in 12th place, meaning they failed to qualify for European football for the following season.
Howe reflected on the progress made during his time on Tyneside, from fighting to avoid relegation to competing among Europe’s leading clubs.
“There have been so many incredible moments in our time here,” Howe added. “From fighting relegation in our first season to the numerous unforgettable nights at St James’ Park in the Champions League soon after. The progression was fast.
“Everyone came together, united and what a force we became. These are all memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
Newcastle said it would provide further information on the appointment of a new head coach once the process has been completed.
