Dreams FC overtake Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in latest CAF club rankings

Dreams FC have become Ghana’s highest-ranked club in the latest CAF rankings ahead of the 2026/27 season, moving above traditional heavyweights Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

The “Still Believe” side are 32nd in Africa after a series of strong performances in CAF inter-club competitions, with their progress driven particularly by an impressive run in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Their position marks a major achievement for a club that has rapidly developed into one of Ghana’s leading representatives on the continental stage. Dreams FC’s historic Confederation Cup campaign brought them up against several of Africa’s leading clubs and earned valuable ranking points, while also raising their profile across the continent.

The latest list does not include either Hearts of Oak or Asante Kotoko, leaving Dreams FC as Ghana’s best-placed club in the rankings.

Both of Ghana’s traditional giants have distinguished records in African football. Asante Kotoko have won the CAF Champions League twice, while Hearts of Oak lifted the competition in 2000. However, inconsistent results in recent seasons, both in domestic football and in CAF competitions, have weakened their standing at continental level.

Medeama SC are the only other Ghanaian club included in the current rankings. They occupy 54th place after representing Ghana in CAF competitions and maintaining a presence in African club football.

The positions underline the shifting landscape of Ghanaian football, as emerging clubs make progress while established powers work to recover the influence they once held domestically and across the continent.

Dreams FC’s rise has been closely linked to their sustained involvement in CAF competition. Their Confederation Cup campaign gave them the opportunity to test themselves against some of Africa’s strongest teams and provided the points that have lifted them to 32nd in the continental standings.

At the top of the African rankings are Mamelodi Sundowns, who lead with 73 points. The South African club have replaced Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly SC, who are second on 66 points.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis, RS Berkane and USM Alger complete the top five.

For Ghana, the rankings offer encouragement over the progress of its emerging clubs and show the value of regular participation in CAF competitions. Dreams FC’s place among Africa’s leading clubs represents a significant step forward, while Medeama SC’s inclusion ensures the country has two clubs listed.

The absence of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko is equally notable given their history and status in Ghanaian football. Their omission means Dreams FC and Medeama SC currently carry Ghana’s hopes on the continental club football ranking table.

The latest standings therefore present a clear contrast between the country’s historic dominance and its current continental representation: Ghana’s most decorated clubs are missing, while Dreams FC have established themselves as the nation’s leading club according to CAF’s latest rankings.
