Dr Ofori urges GFA to boost Black Stars backroom staff

Former Black Stars psychologist Dr Patrick Ofori has urged the Ghana Football Association to strengthen the technical setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

His call follows Ghana’s failure to qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations and the subsequent additions of Desmond Ofei, Winfried Schafer and Gregory De Grauwe to the backroom staff in January last year.

With Ghana now qualified for the World Cup to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, Dr Ofori believes more expertise is still required.

“I still think they may need to beef it up because football has evolved,” he told Citi Sports.

“There are teams that have analysts whose sole job is to study opposing defenders; their concentration levels, behaviour and patterns,” Dr Ofori added.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L for the tournament.

Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.

They will then face England in Boston before rounding off the group stage against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.

The World Cup presents another chance for the national team to reset expectations on the global stage.

After group-stage exits in Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022, Ghana are determined to make a stronger impression in 2026.
