The tension between the Ghana FA and sports ministry took a new dramatic twist on Wednesday when Deputy Sports Minister, Vincent Oppong Asamoah slammed the achievements of the Kwesi Nyantakyi led administration in youth football.
Asamoah, who has been an arch opponent of the Ghana FA, questioned the achievements of the in youth football even though Africa’s only U20 World Cup title was achieved under Nyantakyi’s administration.
Oppong Asamoah claims the country’s grassroots development in football has collapsed under the Kwesi Nyantekyi’s reign comparatively.
This is the latest of the spat between the two bodies with the GFA insisting that the sports ministry is seeking to bring the federation under its control.
The deputy minister claims the over concentration on the Black Stars by the GFA has negatively affected the development of youth football insisting it would destroy the foundation of the game.
“Most of the GFA media partners will always jump to their defense with the political clout of we are always guilty and they are always right. But to me the bottom-line we have to sit down and ask ourselves whether football is growing or not,” Oppong Asamoah told Starr FM.
“If you ask me we started very well at the youth level every football nation is measured from youth football.
“As for the Black Stars you can call them from over the world but to me the grassroots is the foundation is the basis of football and we are not getting it right.”
Despite the claims by the deputy minister, Ghana won the U20 World Cup under the Nyantakyi administration while all the women’s junior national teams have qualified for all their World Cup tournaments under this administration.
Meanwhile, the sports ministry or government does not contribute anything to the development of youth football in Ghana.
