Former Ghana defender Dan Quaye believes the debate over Ghana’s main goalkeeper is already settled.
He insists Hearts of Oak captain Benjamin Asare has shown enough quality to be trusted as the Black Stars’ leading option ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Asare’s influence was evident during Ghana’s recent international run, including the narrow win over the Central African Republic that secured qualification.
At club level, his steady presence has stood out, highlighted by a strong run of clean sheets in the Ghana Premier League this season.
Quaye argues that such consistency naturally elevates a goalkeeper’s status at the national level.
“Asare has established himself as Ghana’s number one goalkeeper. He has nothing to prove before earning a place in the Black Stars,” Quaye said.
He also addressed Hearts of Oak’s approach to rotating goalkeepers during a demanding campaign.
“I support Didi Dramani’s goalkeeper rotation policy because Asare needs rest. Sammy Adjei and Eben Dida competed at the top level at Hearts, and nothing happened.
“The rotation policy won’t be problematic for either Hearts of Oak or the Black Stars. Asare cannot play all games, and Agbasi has shown he can perform,” he added.
According to Quaye, smart squad management will benefit both club and country in the long run.
With Ghana set to face England, Croatia and Panama at the World Cup, Asare is tipped to play a decisive role in goal.
