The National Peace Council (NPC) has commended the people of Dagbon for conducting the funeral rites of the late Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II peacefully and with dignity, while overseeing a smooth transition to the Regent of Dagbon.
In a statement issued on 31 July, the council said the ceremonies demonstrated Dagbon’s resilience, unity and firm commitment to peace. It described the reign of the late Yaa Naa as one marked by wisdom, humility and reconciliation.
The NPC said the orderly performance of the First and Second Bɔglilɔgbu, followed by the installation of the Regent, showed the continuing strength of Dagbon’s traditional institutions.
It added that the events reflected the people’s shared determination to protect peace through customary practices, dialogue and collective responsibility.
The council praised the Government, Interior Ministry, National and Regional Security Councils, Police Service, Armed Forces, Fire Service and Ambulance Service, along with other agencies involved in the ceremonies.
It said their professionalism and co-ordination had contributed significantly to the successful organisation of the funeral rites and the regency transition.
The NPC also recognised the role played by the clergy, the Muslim community, women, youth groups, civil society organisations, development partners and volunteers.
The media and the general public were also acknowledged for their responsible conduct, which the council said helped ensure that the funeral process was completed successfully.
The council urged journalists and members of the public to verify information before sharing it. It also warned against spreading inflammatory material that could threaten peace in Dagbon.
Call for support during regency
With Dagbon now entering a period of regency, the NPC called on chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, women, young people and all sons and daughters of Dagbon to support the Regent.
It said the late Yaa Naa’s legacy should be protected through dialogue, tolerance and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The council further reaffirmed its readiness to work with the Dagbon Traditional Council and other stakeholders to strengthen the progress made in peacebuilding.
It encouraged all parties to follow the Dagbon Constitution and the customary roadmap for selecting the next Yaa Naa. The NPC said adherence to those principles would help ensure that the process was inclusive and peaceful.

It concluded with prayers for the eternal rest of the late Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II and for wisdom and strength for the Regent as he guides the kingdom through its transitional period.
