And as you will discover from their backgrounds below, the names on the shortlist is a far cry from some of the illustrious names that were peddled around in the local media. Like KickOffGhana.com boldly predicted throughout too there was no chance former Spurs and Sevilla coach Juande Ramos and the German great Lothar Mattheus who has only recently taken charge of Bulgaria were going to get the post. Instead the GFA has gone for a shortlist lacking in not just big names but coaching experience that will not make the jaw drop. The Portuguese Humberto Cuelho is in that sense the most experienced of the lot. He took Portugal to the semi-finals of the 2004 European Championships after a fine playing career with the same country before taking charge of Morocco and Tunisia. With both North Africans though he stuttered particularly when his Tunisia side failed to reach the 2010 World Cup on the final day. Marcel Desailly has no coaching experience but he is the most high profile name in that list after winning the world cup and the European Championships with France as well as captaining them. His root as a Ghanaian has made him a sentimental favourite but the fact that the former Chelsea and AC Milan defender has no previous coaching record is a major minus. Herbert Addo has had a long distinguished career as coach in Ghana. He took AshantiGold to the finals of the CAF Champions League in 1997. He then stunned the Ghanaian football world when he took Aduana Stars to the Ghana league title on a mean defence and not so prolific strike force. He is presently in charge of the local components of the Black Stars preparing for their championships of African Nations tournament in Sudan early next year. Goran Stevanovic is hoping to become the third Serbian boss of Ghana in succession and hopes his three years with Serbia and Montenogro as an assistant will aid his bid for the job. He was also assistant coach of Partizan Belgrade between 2007-2009 before taking over the job for a year until 2010. The German-Turk Bahtiyar Can Vanli has perhaps the most unspectacular background of the lot. He worked as a tactical analyst and advisor for Turkey coach Senol Gunes at the 2003 Confederations Cup and is now in charge of Maldives club VB Sport Club having previously coaches Turkish Second Division outfit Yeni Kirsehispor.
